Getting Started:
So someone invited you to play an Internet game called mafia. And you find yourself here, wondering what the game is about and how to play it. Don't worry! This guide (credit goes to my friends over @ Rev Mafia) is a very to the point, play by play guide to explaining the game an how it works. One word of warning: mafia is highly addictive! Once you play a game or two, you're usually hooked! Remember, if you have any questions, feel free to PM me or any of the other players here with your questions. Now, lets get started...
A Beginners Guide to Mafia
Mafia has evolved from a game that used to be played in person. The goal of the game is to stay alive and win. The setup of the game consists of the game hosts forming 2 teams (assigned at random): the town (the larger of the two teams) and the mafia (the smaller of the two teams). The town players, "townies," do not know who one another are (unless they have a role which gives them the ability to communicate with another townie) but the mafia know who the other mafia members are, and work together as a team to try to deceive the town, and win the game.
Basically, if you are a Townie, you need to figure out who is Mafia and vote to lynch them. If you are Mafia, you want to get Townies lynched as well as figure out who has the Power Role (like Cop or Doctor) as you will want to Night Kill them.
The way this works is that everyone posts their suspicions in the game thread during the Day. Be wary though, the mafia will be trying to twist things. You need to figure who is truthful and who is a scheming lying mafia! Sometimes, players will drop hints about their allegiance, sometimes the mafia will make slips. You also want to look and see who appears to be aligned with who. You might get accused and you will need to defend. You might accuse another player. You can do this by linking to posts or quoting posts that backs up your theory of them being mafia (and if you are mafia, you can still do the same thing )
As you get more experienced, you will last longer in a game and may even win! (Of course this sometimes happens for your first game too ).
Each day and night cycle lasts 24hrs. You need to vote for a player that you want wliminatwd from the game each day cycle before the timer runs out. It is usually not a good thing to vote really, really early in the event you end up making a hasty decision. Once you have voted, you CANNOT change your vote. It is final.
Each Night, the mafia will get to select who they want to kill and Power Townies will use their abilities to try to thwart the mafia. Nights generally last 24 hrs.
We were all new once. We want to do what we can to help make getting into the game as easy as possible for you!! It's a friendly place. At the end of the day, what happens in mafia stays in mafia; and a lot of us return time and time again for new games. A lot of us have played many, many games together. Feel free to ask questions (but you might want to PM the Game Host(s) or a non playing Mod for help if you are really unsure of what you are doing)
And there are a number of things that can get you lynched quickly:
Too much Off Topic chatter
Joking about a Lynch
Joking about making an LD statement if is required
Not posting (Under the Radar)
Don't out your role, it's bad form, and generally speaking, not a good idea because the mafia will be looking for any hints at your role or affiliation. You need to be able to defend yourself without using a free pass, or "get out of jail free" card. It diminishes the fun of the game. Role hinting is strongly frowned upon, because in the past, it has led to mass role hinting/outing. Each game has a general set of rules, but some are different. If role hinting is expressly forbidden, respect the game host and abide by the rules.
Please do not break the rules. They exist for a reason. First and foremost: don't get butthurt. If you end up on the losing team, don't whine about it. Don't try to make the winning players feel guilty for winning. It's just a game, and nobody, despite experience or lack of, will win some and lose some. Keep it fun.
Most importantly HAVE FUN!!! We are really nice people even when we are scheming to kill each other. We are all friends here (no really, we are!!). We invite the veterans to add anything in that we've missed. We always feel bad for the people who are new to our games who make mistakes that don't seem like mistakes to them at the time, and then get lynched for it.
Here is a list of common acronyms that you might see in a game:
BTSC = Behind The Scenes Contact.
EBWOP = Edit By Way of Post. Since you can't edit, this is used to indicate you need to change or add something to a post you just made.
Disco = Discovery Role
LD = Lie Detector
RB = Role Blocker
WIFOM = Wine in front of me (Princess Bride reference) - This is a strategy used by people that are under fire in the thread by saying that "they would never do that."
Switcheroo known elsewhere as OMGUS (Oh My God You Suck) = When a baddie is accused/under fire and turns the tables by accusing the person that's accusing them.
DP = Day Post
NK-- Night Kill
Linkitis = Briefly, it's an term coined by the Lostpedia forum players which refers to when you post at the same as someone else, rendering your post somewhat irrelevant, or not being in context anymore...or so that you need to respond to people.
The most important thing to remember is the even though Mafia is srs bzns, you should always HAVE FUN!! You are going to get lynched, you are going to get NK'd. You will be accused. Do not take it personally. It is JUST A GAME and we happen to be very addicted to it here.
